About: What is ACM?Founded in 1947, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the largest and oldest international scientific and educational computer society in the industry today. Since its inception, ACM has provided its members and the world of computer science a forum for the sharing of knowledge on the developments and achievements necessary to the fruitful interchange of ideas. Over the years, ACM has flourished along with the industry itself, playing a major role in enriching the quality, form, and function of computer use. Nearly all the giants of software development have been personally influenced by ACM membership — most through either ACM publications, ACM Special Interest Groups (SIGs), ACM Chapters and Student Chapters, or ACM conferences — and virtually all academic computer science curricula used today stem from ACM'S involvement in curricula creation and their efforts to maintain a consistently high level of content in computer science instruction. The student chapter of ACM at the University of University of Minnesota endeavours to apply the principles of the ACM on a smaller scale in our mission of service to the Computer Science and Engineering Dept., students, and computing enthusiasts in general. Throughout each school year, the student chapter sponsors a wide variety of activities including guest lecturers, coding competitions, instructional classes, social events; and also participates in a wide variety of university-wide and college-wide events and activities. |
